Can Turtles and Tortoises Survive Without Their Shells?

Turtles and turtles are identical to the shells on their bodies. The shells or shells that exist in turtles and turtles are a unitary body that cannot just be separated. The shells of turtles and tortoises are made of keratin and stiff hard bones that grow in the back and chest cavity.

From this brief explanation, it can be concluded that turtles and turtles cannot live without their shells. Except, there are turtles and tortoises that are born disabled without shells.

Launching Science Trends, turtle and turtle shells protect vital organs such as the liver, stomach, kidneys, heart and intestines.

Although they are made of hard bones, turtles can still fit their heads, four legs and tails into their shells for protection.

In the video titled "Could a turtle live outside its shell?" circulating on Youtube, the broadcast host named Doug explained that turtles and turtles are different from hermit crabs.

Hermit crabs live in shells, but the shells are not part of the body, so they are free to enter and exit the shell.

For turtles and turtles that are born normally, this is not the case. Turtle and turtle shells are divided into two parts. The upper shell covering the back is called the carapace and the lower part covering the stomach is called the plastron.

"These two parts are very hard. If you pay attention, in the upper and lower shells there are layers of skin that are connected to each other and there are no gaps between them," said Doug in his video. The carapace and plastron are connected by bony structures called bridges.

According to a number of studies, ancient turtles in the past did not have bones or shells as complete as modern turtles. From a number of ancient turtle fossils, experts only found a long spine.

Based on these findings, experts think that it is likely that the spine continued to grow and eventually evolved to form the shell we see today.
