A mummy from 3,000 years ago was found with an expression of pain. This also raises several questions for researchers. Now, after some speculation, the latest research from radiologists and archaeologists at Cairo University suggests that the cause of death may have been a painful heart attack.
Reporting from IFL Science, the latest CT scan results revealed that the woman's mummy was suffering from severe atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries. It is a disease in which the heart's blood vessels are disrupted by plaque and eventually become blocked.
In addition, it is known that atherosclerosis is present in the neck arteries, abdominal aorta and lower leg arteries.

Although it is not certain whether this mummy actually died from a heart attack, researchers believe he had a heart problem.
In her study, Dr Zahi Hawass, a well-known Egyptian historian, explained that the woman probably died of a heart attack and was trapped in an open mouth position due to rigor mortis (stiffness that occurs in the muscles of a person who is going to or has died).
"We suspect that the body of the 'screaming female mummy' was not found until several hours later, enough time to create rigor mortis," explained Dr Hawass.
"Even the embalmers could not seem to close their mouths and lay down the female corpse like the other mummies, thus preserving facial expressions and posture according to death," he added.
Today, atherosclerosis is usually associated with an unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, and smoking habits. However, in ancient Egypt conditions were somewhat different.
A 2014 study stated that ancient mummies exhibited atherosclerosis due to inflammation from microbes and parasites, as well as from smoke inhalation.
The 3,100-year-old mummy was first discovered in the southern city of Luxor in 1881. Its identity remains unclear. Egyptian inscriptions on mummified linen describe her as "Royal princess, sister of Meret Amon."
However, there are many princesses who have this name and very little evidence to reveal identity. Currently, the research team is conducting DNA analysis of the "screaming female mummy" in hopes of confirming who she is.
